The Telomere Effect: A Revolutionary Approach to Living Younger, Healthier, Longer

I started this book on my first day on a short city break, by the sea. It took me around 3 days to finish it. The main focus of the book is on explaining what a telomere is and how our life is slowly declining.

Let me explain a little bit what a telomere means, the telomere is part of our chromosomes. In each cell in our body, we have 23 pairs of chromosomes, they contain basically all our genetic information, around 3 billions base pairs of nucleotides A, T, C, G. A base pair is basically a pair of A-T or G-C. Now from all of these 3b base pairs, on both heads of a chromosome, we have a repeating sequence of DNA that keeps our DNA safe. With each cellular division, this sequence gets shorter and shorter. In human cells, telomere length at birth is approximately 11 kilobases and decreasing to around 5 kilobases when we die.

If this telomere is getting too short the cell stops dividing and it’s transformed into a state called senescent, ultimately dying.

Basically, that’s how we die, of natural causes, our telomeres get too short causing us different health issues.

In the book, we can see how everything affects our telomere lifespan and how we can even ’restore’ parts of it.

It was an interesting read, easy, I was expecting to be a little bit more focused on science but its main focus is to help the reader understand how he/she can improve their telomere degradation.
